Social networking sites are web-based services that allow
people to make a public or semi-private profile within a bounded system, gather
a list of other users that they share a connection with, and view and go over
their list of connections as well as those connections made by others within
the system. The people may vary from site to site as well as how everything is arranged. Social networking sites that make money
from advertisers “let us to stay connected to family and friends, make new
friends, arrange dates with potential partners, network professionally, and
share our artistic talents with the world” (Smith 212). The 15 most popular networking sites include: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, Google
Plus+, DeviantArt, LiveJournal, Tagged, Orkut, CafeMom, Ning, Meetup, myLife,
myYearbook, and Badoo.
